Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)
What are the causes of gynecomastia?
The male breast reduction surgery helps men with enlarged breasts and or nipples, who may experience pain or embarrassment because of gynecomastia. This surgery removes fat, glandular tissue and or excess skin and brings physical relief as well as improving the appearance of the chest, making it more masculine.
In some cases the abnormal growth of male breasts is caused by a hormonal imbalance or obesity. But most cases there is no known cause.
How do you treat gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is surgically treated with a procedure called mammoplasty breast reduction. The goal of this particular procedure in men is to create a more masculine chest. The correction is a very dramatic reduction not a mastectomy that would leave the chest unnaturally flat. The nipple and areola are kept attached to their nerves and blood vessels but the excess tissue and skin is removed. The final scar is around the areola and the bottom fold of the breast. Large areola and nipple can also be reduced at this time.
The surgery is done as an outpatient procedure in my fully accredited surgical suite under general anesthesia. The duration of surgery is about 3 hours and is done with all invisible sutures that the body dissolves so there is no need to remove them. Recovery time is minimal allowing patients to remove their dressings only 2 days after surgery to shower, resume normal lighter activities and gradually full activity by the second week.
